Abstract:
A questionnaire was developed to assess the financial burden of illness on patients and their relatives. Forty hospitalized psychiatric patients and their relatives were compared with 40 hospitalized non-psychiatric patients and their relatives. In spite of modern social support system it is obvious that illness has an important influence on the patients' work and financial status. This results in worries and loan taken. The importance of this is greater concerning psychiatric patients than non psychiatric patients. Relatives of psychiatric patients are experiencing greater financial problems. In 38.9% cases they had to be absent from work for a period of time to take care of the patient. It is obvious that there is need for more support, not only to the patients but also to their relatives especially after discharge from hospital.; Hér verður gerð grein fyrir fjárhagslegu álagi og röskun á starfsgetu aðstandenda og sjúklinga. Niðurstöður sýna m.a., að þrátt fyrir sjúkratryggingabætur fylgir fjárhagslegt álag oft veikindum. Þetta gildir ekki dðeins um fjárhag sjúklinga heldur einnig fjárhag aðstandenda. From kom einnig að veikindin höföu umtalsverð áhrif á möguleika aðstandenda til að sinna sínum störfum.
