Public evaluation of alcoholism

Abstract
In order to study the general public's attitudes towards alcoholism, the respondents in an epidemiological survey on drinking habits and alcohol abuse, were asked which of the four different statements gives the best description of alcoholism: 1. An illness that strikes without warning, and people do not have personal control over whether they get it or not. 2. An illness people have little control over whether they get it or not. 3. An illness that people have a great deal of control over whether they get it or not. 4. It's not a real illness. People bring it on themselves. 5. Don't know. The majority of the respondents disagree with the statement that alcoholism is a disease that strikes without warning, and people have no control over. A large proportion of the respondents that considers alcoholism not to be a disease is the elderly population, people with limited or no education and abstainers. Those who agree with the statement that alcoholism is a disease were mostly women, people with alcohol problems themselves and those who have been in treatment for alcoholism.
Til þess að leita frekari skýringar á hvers vegna meðferðartilboðum vegna áfengismisnotkunar hefur verið jafn vel tekið hér á landi og raun ber vitni var reynt að kanna viðhorf almennings til drykkjusýki. Í faraldsfræðilegri könnun á neysluvenjum og misnotkun áfengis, sem gerð var árið 1984 var spurt »Hver þessara staðhæfinga lýsir drykkjusýki (alkóhólisma) best?« 1. Sjúkdómur, sem gerir ekki boð á undan sér, og fólk ræður engu um hvort það fær eða ekki. 2. Sjúkdómur, sem fólk ræður litlu um hvort það fær eða ekki. 3. Sjúkdómur, sem fólk ræður miklu um hvort það fær eða ekki. 4. Það er ekki raunverulegur sjúkdómur heldur sjálfskaparvíti. 5. Veit ekki. Meiri hlutinn fellst ekki á það, að drykkjusýki sé sjúkdómur, sem fólk ráði engu um. Þeir sem hafa þá skoðun að drykkjusýki sé ekki sjúkdómur voru tiltölulega eldra fólk, fólk með minni menntun og bindindismenn. Þeir sem telja að drykkjusýki sé sjúkdómur voru oftar konur, fólk með áfengisvandamál og þeir sem höfðu farið í meðferð vegna þeirra.
