Abstract
Aim. To investigate the health and lifestyle information behaviour among Icelanders as well as their health behaviour. Data collection and research method. The sample consists of 1.000 Icelanders, aged eighteen to eighty, randomly selected from the National Register of Persons in Iceland. The data were gathered by means of a postal survey during the spring 2007, response rate was 47%. Cluster analysis (k-means) was used to draw participants in four clusters, passive, moderately passive, moderately active and active, based on their purposive health and lifestyle information seeking in 22 sources. The information sources were grouped into four information channels: media, health specialists, internet and interpersonal sources. One-way ANOVA or binary logistic regression were used to analyse how often the clusters encountered information in the media, from health specialists and on the internet, how reliable and useful they considered the information, as well as the clusters health behaviour concerning the consumption of fruit and vegetables and physical exercise. Results. The information behaviour of the clusters differed and also their health behaviour. The members of the clusters who sought information more often had a healthier lifestyle. Conclusion: The results indicate that men who have received less education is a group that needs particular attention when information about healthy behaviour is disseminated.
