Hypocone reduction of maxillary first and second permanent molars in Icelanders
Citation
Tannlæknablaðið 2006, 23(1):17-23
Abstract
The material consisted of dental stone casts of the dentitions of 1011 children, aged 6-17 years, from two rural and one urban population, North-east Iceland. The incidence and degree of expression of the hypocone on the permanent molars were scored according to the four-grade scale of Dahlberg with constant reference to the standard plaques (plaque P9) of Dahlberg. Right side recordings were used. The left side was used only to fill in missing right side data. A total of 476 duplicate determinations were made with a few weeks between observations. Reproducibility was 96.8%. M1, as in many other populations, shows minimal reduction. A fully developed hypocone was present in 95.2% and a slightly reduced cusp in 4.3% of M1. M2 shows considerable reduction. Fully developed hypocone was present in only 6.7%, rudimentary in 17.1% and the hypocone was absent in 28.5% of M2. The diference between the sexes was significant for M2 but not for M1.
