Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 1) coping strategies and adjustment to chronic pain; 2) pain intensity and adjustment; 3) coping strategies and perceived control over pain. A cross-sectional research design was employed and data was collected by a postal questionnaire. Adjustment was assessed by using the Short form-20 health survey (SF-20), measuring perceived general health, and physical and psychosocial health. Coping was assessed with the Pain Coping Stategies Questionnaire (CSQ). Eligable participants were all those who were on a waiting list (N = 72) to be admitted to a rehabilitation centre. Fourty five valid responses were returned (62.5%). Reinterpreting pain sensation and catastrophizing were the two coping strategies showing the strongest relationship with adjustment factors. Statistically significant relationship was identified between pain intensity and physical health (r=-0.387; p≤0.05); perceived general health (r=-0.444; p≤0.01) and perceived control over pain (r=-0.304; p≤0.05). These results indicate two coping strategies having strongest relation with adjustment factors. Intensity of pain tested statistically significantly related to perceived control over pain and adjustment factors, even though pain intensity is not statistically significantly related to coping strategies.
Tilgangur þessarar rannsóknar var að skoða: 1) tengsl á milli mismunandi viðbragða við langvinnum verkjum og aðlögunar að verkjunum; 2) hvort tengsl væru á milli styrks verkja og aðlögunar; 3) viðbragða við verkjunum og tilfinninga fyrir að hafa stjórn á þeim. Notað var þverskurðarsnið og gögnum safnað með spurningalistum sem þátttakendum voru sendir í pósti. Aðlögun var metin með því að nota Short form-20 spurningalistann (SF-20) sem mælir mat sjúklinga á eigin heilsu, og líkamlega og sálfélagslega heilsu. Viðbrögð við verkjum voru skoðuð með því að nota Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ). Þátttakendur voru einstaklingar á biðlista eftir endurhæfingu vegna langvarandi verkja (N = 72). Svör bárust frá 45 einstaklingum (62,5%). Endurtúlkun sársaukatilfinningar (reinterpreting pain sensation) og hörmungahyggja (catastrophizing) voru þau viðbrögð sem sýndu sterkust tengsl á milli aðlögunarþátta. Marktæk tengsl voru milli styrks verkja að jafnaði og líkamlegrar heilsu (r=-0,387; p≤0,05); mats á almennri heilsu (r=-0,444; p≤0,01) og hversu mikla stjórn þátttakendur töldu sig hafa á verkjunum (r=-0,304; p≤0,05). Niðurstöður benda til að það séu einkum tvenns konar viðbrögð við langvinnum verkjum sem hafi sterkust tengsl við aðlögun að þeim. Styrkur verkja hefur að jafnaði tölfræðilega marktæk tengsl við það hversu mikla stjórn einstaklingar telja sig hafa á verkjunum og hversu mikið þeir telja sig geta dregið úr þeim. Ekki er þó um að ræða tölfræðilega marktæk tengsl milli styrks verkja og viðbragða við verkjum.
