Abstract
Fyrir röskum 25 árum lögðu tveir breskir öldrunarlæknar, Isaacs og Caird, til að hugtakið heilabilun yrði tekið til almennrar notkunar í klíniskri læknisfræði. Þeir skilgreindu hana sem „víðtæka skerðingu á heilastarfsemi með truflunum á minni, einbeitingu og dómgreind, hjá sjúklingi með eðlilega meðvitund“ Tekið var fram að hugtakið heilabilun ætti ekki við sérstök frávik í sérhæfðri starfsemi heilans eins og kennistol og málstol eða breytingar á skapgerð, tilfinningum eða hegðun1.
