Influenza, quo vadis? [editorial]

Útdráttur
Undanfarin ár hefur heimsbyggðin, að minnsta kosti þeir sem aflögufærir eru, búið sig undir heimsfaraldur inflúensu. Menn velkjast ekki í vafa um að hann mun yfir okkur ganga, spurningin er hvenær, hve stór og af hvaða stofni. Á undanförnum 300 árum hafa tíu faraldrar inflúensu A gengið yfir. Á síðastliðinni öld gengu þrír. Spænska veikin 1918-1919 dró 50-100 milljónir manns til dauða, en Asíuinflúensan 1957 og Hong Kong inflúensan 1968 voru sem betur fer mun smærri í sniðum. Allir þessir faraldrar hafa átt upptök sín í Suðaustur-Asíu. Þaðan má einnig vænta hins næsta, hvort sem hann verður fuglainflúensan H5N1 eða annar stofn, sem reyndar er orðinn tímabær miðað við gang þeirrar klukku sem tímasett hefur fyrri faraldra.
