Abstract
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The assessment and diagnosis of children’s mental disorders is generally focused on pathology. An alternative approach is presented here, wherein children’s mental health problems are assessed by items pertaining to normal emotional development. Item analyses on three independent datasets are reported. The first dataset (n = 91) included 73 items covering socio-emotional development in a sample of mothers of 6 to 10 year old children. Thirty-one items met criteria for item analysis. Factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure: Temperament, Social assertiveness and Anxiety control. New items were constructed to strengthen the factor structure. Item analysis in a sample of mothers of 6 to 12 year old children (n = 191) revealed the same three factors. In the last dataset (n = 107), based on a sample of mothers of 6 to 12 year old children, the three-factor structure emerged again. Furthermore, item development yielded a new factor: Attributional style. Overall, the reliability of the factors were from .90 to .96. Factor intercorrelations ranged from .08 to .52. All factors were approximately normally distributed. Two factors showed age-based increases in total scores (Temperament and Anxiety control). Strong correlations were found between the Anxious-Shy factor on the Conner’s Parent Rating Scale-Revised (CPRS-R) and two of the aforementioned factors (Temperament and Anxiety control). The results indicate that anxiety problems in children are associated with important factors in socio-emotional development and that child anxiety can be assessed on a continuous normally distributed scale.
