Abstract
Þessu tölublaði Læknablaðsins birtist áhugaverð grein Einars Þórs Þórarinssonar og meðhöfunda (1) um leit að þáttum sem skýra öfugt samband menntunar og dánartíðni, sérstaklega kransæðasjúkdóma í Hjartaverndarrannsókninni. Könnun þessi byggist á spurningum til undirhóps úr upphaflegu úrtaki Hjartaverndarrannsóknarinnar. Fyrri grein Kristjáns Guðmundssonar og félaga (2) hafði fjallað um samanburð á helstu áhættuþáttum kransæðasjúkdóma og menntunar og fundið að þessir áhættuþættir voru marktækt oftar til staðar meðal þeirra sem einungis höfðu grunnskólapróf (hópur IV) en þeirra sem höfðu háskólapróf (hópur I), þeir sem höfðu stúdentspróf (hópur II) eða gagnfræðapróf (hópur III) voru mitt á milli. Samkvæmt þessum niðurstöðum átti áhættan á kransæðasjúkdómi í hópi IV að vera 10% meiri meðal karla og 20% meiri meðal kvenna heldur en í hópi I. Við slíkan samanburð er þó vert að hafa í huga að ein mæling á áhættuþætti (til dæmis kólesteróli) getur vanmetið áhættu þess þáttar (allt að 60%) samanborið við að fleiri mælingar lægju til grundvallar yfir nokkurn tíma til að vinna upp skekkjur í mælingu og líffræðilegan breytileika (3)
