The aim of this study was to look at nurses’ use, experience, and attitude towards the Trendelenburg position, at the critical care-, anaesthesia- and emergency wards of Landspítali University Hospital. The sample was taken from six critical care and emergency wards of the Landspítali University Hospital, and included 237 nurses. The response rate was 45%. The mode of the research was via the Internet, and data gathering was therefore exclusively gathered on the World Wide Web, where a questionnaire in ten parts was saved. The main results of the study show that the Trendelenburg position is used by 99% of nurses. About 70% of those who responded believe that the Trendelenburg position raises blood pressure in patients with a low blood pressure. A great majority of nurses has been informed of the Trendelenburg position during their university studies, and from co-workers. Half of the nurses have read about the position in books concerning the profession. The Trendelenburg position is much used in the clinical work of nurses in the Landspítali University Hospital. The nurses’ clinical experience of it is different from the professional material available about the Trendelenburg position. Therefore, it seems that the use of the Trendelenburg position is an example of a treatment that is based more on tradition than on results based on research.
