Development of anterior dental arch spacing and crowding from adolescence to adulthoodCitation
Tannlæknablaðið 2008, 26(1):40-43Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinally the development of space condition in dental arches in a sample of the Icelandic population. Methods: The sample comprised 245 adolescents examined clinically in the late mixed or permanent dentition and again 25 years later. All subjects were untreated orthodontically and all had full complement of teeth at both examinations. Results: A significant increase was seen in prevalence of mandibular anterior crowding and decrease in maxillary anterior spacing. The ratio of self-correction of maxillary anterior spacing was 82% and of mandibular anterior crowding 27%. Normal space conditions at adolescence stayed mostly unchanged, with the exception of 11.2% of subjects who developed mandibular anterior crowding between the first and second examinations. Conclusion: Increased crowding in mandibular region was confirmed and self-correction of maxillary anterior spacing was found more frequently than expected.Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine longitudinally the development of space condition in dental arches in a sample of the Icelandic population.
