Abstract
Children’s behaviour, wellbeing and self-esteem are greatly influenced by parenting practices. Various programs have been developed throughout the world that teach parents effective methods to increase compliance, positive behaviour and independence and reduce negative behaviours. The purpose of the current study was to examine one such program, Parenting that Works. About 400 parents who attended this group program over the course of two years at the Centre for Child Development and Behaviour (Primary Health Care of the Capital Area) in Iceland were asked to participate in the study. Approximately 354 parents (thereof 238 mothers) answered a questionnaire before starting the program and 110 (92 mothers) answered the questions again after the intervention was completed. The results revealed that parents modified their reactions and parenting practices after completing the program in such a way that they now more often ignored negative behaviour and whining, showed independent play and positive behaviours more attention and felt more confident about setting limits. In addition, they felt they had more parenting support from others after participating in the program. These results indicate that a relatively simple and short parenting program can have positive influences on childrearing practices and the modification of children´s behaviour.
