Abstract
Studies have shown some benefits from using complementary therapies (CT) to reduce symptoms and improve the wellbeing of patients. Many health care centers allow their use and integration. Nurses have been offering CT to patients at the Landspitali – The National University Hospital of Iceland. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain information about the use of CT at Landspitali. Method: Data was collected through an electronic questionnaire with 35 questions. It was sent to 73 department head nurses (DHN) at Landspitali through the Lime Survey system. Findings: The questionnaire was answered by 39 DHN and the response rate was 53%. The most commonly used therapies, according to the DHN who responded, were massage therapy (78%) and relaxation therapy (48%). The most commonly reported reasons for the use of CT were to treat anxiety and to improve general wellbeing of the patients. Appropriately trained nurses and nurse’s aides were the most likely administers of complementary therapies. Over half of them said that the effects were always assessed but only 21% that the CT was always documented. About 51% of the DHN assume that patients are rarely asked about the use of CT. Conclusion: There is increased interest within nursing to use CT to increase patient’s wellbeing and increase in the selection of CT offered at Landspitali and in the use of CT compared to 2002 or about 20%. It is important to support the use of CT at Landspitali and develop further clinical guidelines for its use.
