Abstract
In the last decades there has been a considerable increase in the use of commentary and alternative therapies (CAM) such as acupuncture, massage and yoga among childbearing women. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of CAM among Icelandic women during pregnancy. The aim was to gain an understanding of which CAM Icelandic women use during pregnancy and why, where they get their motivation and who gives them information about the use of CAM. Questionnaire was designed based on systematic review, pretested with focus groups and tested on 50 newly mothers, randomly chosen, 45 women (90%) answered the list. Average age was 30 years, 18 (40%) primiparas and 27 (60%) multiparas. Findings showed that most of the women had one or more physical or mental problem during pregnancy, the most common were nausea, heartburn, shortness of breath, back- and pelvic pain. Vitamin, massage and pregnancy swimming classes were the most commonly used CAM during pregnancy. Twenty women (45%) had been motivated to use CAM during pregnancy. Midwifes were the motivational person in most of the cases and also the one that provided the information about use of CAM to pregnant women. Compared to foreign researches pregnant women tend to use CAM to prevent or minimize pregnancy-related symptoms. The findings of this research indicate that it is also like that in Iceland but a bigger sample from all of Iceland would give us better information. Women trust their midwife about CAM use during pregnancy and therefore it is important that the knowledge of midwives needs is in line with that information.
