Abstract
Purpose: The main purpose of the study was to observe the quality and success of information provided to patients treated with complete dentures (CD) and/or removable partial dentures (RPD) at the Faculty of Odontology (FO) of the University of Iceland, and to analyze their usage of available post treatment such as relining of the dentures. Materials and methods: The participants had been treated by dental students at the FO and had received CD or/and RPD. A letter of invitation to participate was sent to the target group followed by a phone call and they requested to answer a questionnaire. A quantitative research method was used and data collected with a questionnaire to explain results using descriptive statistic. Results: A total of 66,7% (n=40) of the target group (n=60) took part in the research; 55% were RPD patients (n=22) and 45% CD patients (n=18). 57,5% (n=23) men and 42,5% (n=17) women. Half (n=9) of the CD patients belonged to the age group of 70-79 years and the most common age group among RPD patients was 60-69 years old 45,5% (n=10). Nearly half of CD 44,4% (n=8) patients and half of RPD patients (n=11) had received verbal instructions on how to maintain their dentures. The majority of both groups (CD: 77.8% (n=14); RPD: 77.3% (n=17)) received no information about the estimated service life of their dentures. Most of the patients (CD: 88.9% (n=16); PRD: 63.6% (n=14)) had the knowledge of denture relining, but the majority of those (CD: 56.3% (n=9); RPD: 57,1% (n=8)) had not received the information during their treatment at the FO. Most CD patients used soap to clean their dentures or 55,6% (n=10) while RPD patients used toothpaste for the same purpose 59,1% (n=13). Most of the patients still use their dentures today or (CD: 88,9% (n=16); RPD: 90,9% (n=20)) and most of theme feel that their dentures still fit (CD: 66,7% (n=12); RPD: 63,6% (n=14)). More RPD patients 59.1% (n=12) disagreed on the need to renew the dentures compared to the CD patients 50% (n=9). Conclusion: Dental students at the FO do well at informing and teaching their patients maintenance of the dentures, only 16.7% CD patients and 9.1% RPD patients didn´t receive information of daily handling of the dentures. Improvement could though be made of informing them about the service life of CD/RPD and the available post treatment services.
