The Icelandic Development Inventory (IDI) was administered to 81 mothers of five year olds. The children were tested on six verbal subtests of an Icelandic version of the WPPSI-R. The children were randomly sampled from day-care centers in Reykjavik. A convergent - divergent correlation pattern emerged between subtests of the two instruments. Three verbal subtests on the IDI (Language comprehension, Language expression, Learning) and the verbal composite have high and significant correlations with all six verbal subtests of WPPSI-R and the verbal IQ. The two motor subtests on the IDI, Gross Motor and Self Help, have low and nonsignificant correlations with all six subtests of WPPSI-R and the verbal IQ. Fine Motor on the IDI has low but significant correlations with four verbal subtests on WPPSI-R. With one exception, the Motor composite score on the IDI has low and nonsignificant correlations with WPPSI-R subtests and verbal IQ. Principal component analysis of IDI six subtests confirms the factor structure of the inventory from previous studies and supports the interpretation of separate verbal and motor components. In a principal component analysis of six subtests of the IDI and six subtests of WPPSI-R two components emerge that account for 59,9% of the subtests variance. Six subtests of the WPPSI-R and two verbal subtests of the IDI load high on the first component and three motor subtests of the IDI load high on the second component. One verbal subtest of the IDI loads moderately on both components.
