Útdráttur
The paper describes changes in standardized mortality ratio (SMR) from suicide in Iceland during 1951 to 1990. It takes into consideration changes in all unatural deaths as well as changes in the size and age distribution of the Icelandic population. Over the past 40 years there have been no significant changes in the mortality from suicides as measured with the SMR. However, the SMR for the total fatality from suicide, accidental and other violent deaths has fallen significantly for men. This is primarily due to a significant drop in accidental deaths not related to traffic. This is in particular true for young men aged 15-24 years. In this group appears to be an increase in the SMR for suicides. This brings up the question whether there has been a change in the number of unregistered suicides. The results are seen as a tribute to accident prevention and treatment programs and they are also seen as underscoring the significance of increased psychiatric prevention.
