Abstract
In this paper a nursing theory is introduced: Nursing as professional caring. The theory was synthesized from seven studies by the author and her colleagues. The major tenets of the theory are that nursing is professional caring and that caring is the core of nursing and yet only one of five major aspects of professional caring. The other aspects are: professional competence, which must always have primacy in nursing; professional wisdom, which develops through the interplay of the nurse’s knowledge and experience; empowering communication and connection between nurse and client, which is a key to good nursing care; and self-knowledge and selfdevelopment of the nurse, without which it is postulated that it is unlikely that the nurse can, in the long run, keep on being caring and empowering in communication with clients of nursing. These major aspects of the theory will be introduced and discussed after an introduction of various aspects of caring in order to put the theory into a theoretical context. Finally, the implications of the theory will be analyzed and the theory criticized.
