Abstract
Forensic psychology is a specialised area within psychology and has grown rapidly, during the past three decades, especially in Britain. This is evident from surveys conducted among psychologists, who are regularly preparing court reports and testifying and from research published in the area. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief review of the development of forensic psychology in Iceland the last decades, focusing on relevant research and on the specific role of forensic psychologists within the criminal justice system, including prisons, police and the courts. The main developments have been the growing independence of forensic psychologists from medical practitioners, their expanding role and general acceptance within the courts including appeal cases. Today courses in forensic psychology are offered at the university level for psychology and law students, and the proliferation of relevant applied research. The development in Iceland has paralleled that in Britain, which is largely due to its being modelled on British research and practice.
