Weight gain in pregnancy was studied in a random sample of 885 Icelandic women delivering during 1985. The mean weight gain was 14.75 kg, but the normal variation by two standard deviations was from 5.6 to 23.9 kg. The mean weekly gain was 495 g (SD 151-839 g). Primigravid women gained more weight than the parous and women with mild pregnancy-induced hypertension gained more than those who were normotensive. Icelandic women are generally taller and heavier than women in comparable studies from other countries. They deliver larger babies and in normal pregnancy their weight gain is on average 18% over a common reference mean.
