Abstract
The National Hearing & Speech Institute, Reykjavik recently acquired equipment for analysis and treatment of tinnitus by masking and residual inhibition (RI). During a one year period tinnitus symptoms of 23 patients were analysed. The patients were 47 to 75 years old - median value 65 years. Males were in majority (65%). All patients suffered from hearing loss and its causes were mainly noise induced hearing loss and/or presbyacusis. Analysis was successful for most patients and masking results positive for about half of the group. Seven patients experienced RI and received an individually adjusted pocket masker for trial treatment. Of the original group 9-27% experienced good or some relief of tinnitus using a masker for residual inhibition. This is in accordance with comparable foreign studies.
