Abstract
Sleep-habits of children in Iceland were studied by a questionnaire and a sleep-diary which were sent to the parents of 600 randomly chosen children age 1-12 years and to 350 teenagers age 13-20. The answer ratio was more than 70%. The sleep duration was almost linearly related to age, 716 minutes at age one, decreasing 14 minutes per year of life. Most sleep-habits were similar to those published for children of other countries, where comparable data is available but there are certain exceptions. Bedtimes are remarkably late and sleep-duration is somewhat shorter among Icelandic children. Eleven years old children in Iceland seem to go to sleep almost 3 hours later than children in Switzerland. Mean wakeup-time in the morning is at 8:45 for all age groups.
